H.U.G. the Official HR500 User Group > Starting up

Hi!

I just got a HR 500 Plus that I'm trying to get up and running but without success. I can't seem to get it to connect with my computer. The reasons for that could be many. SCSI-card, Software etc.

According to the manual you should first turn on the scanner with 70mm CAL. It should give you a couple of beeps. And then you should start up the computer. But it just doesn't work. When I start it up now it gives me one beep and the scanner light doesn't turn on. Only the green little light telling me that it's powered on. I then turn on the computer and nothing really happens.

However, I know the scanner did give me several beeps earlier and the scanner light turned on. Should the scanner act like that every time, even without a computer? Could I have a hardware problem with the scanner or is it because of the connection between computer and scanner?

Thanks!

Hi,

I think that you have a hardware problem with the computer in the scanner, the scanner computer shoul be booting up and turn on the lamp beföre you should turn on your computer.

If i recond right it should first beep ones then after a while it should beeps 3 times this should take about 5 minutes, then you can turn your computer on

Regards

Thanks Johan. If that's the case that's some pretty bad news since I doubt I will be able to fix it. I wish the scanner would give me some more information of what was actually wrong. It's also very surprising that it actually did turn on the light once but that it doesn't anymore.

Could starting it without the CAL holder cause problems?

No, the scanner should boot up even if the CAL holder is not present.

Try do open the scanner and make some "excercise" on the cables inside to make better contact, especially on the cables to the internal harddrive.

If i do not remember wrong there should be a 15-pin connector inside where you could connect a monitor, check that and if it so connect a monitor and if your are lucky you should see what´s wrong on the screen.

Since you have got it up and running once it do not have to be a serious problem

Thanks! I'll try that. Is it also possible that it could be a burned out light bulb?

I opened it up and checked all the connections. Can't find anything that seems off in there. Checked on all the connections. Also, I can't find a 15-pin connector that you mentioned. I also tried switching the light bulb but no go.

I wonder what I could do now. I'm in Stockholm, Sweden. Probably impossible to find someone that could fix it here.

Hi Felix

I did not meant that any of the connectors should be off, but a known problem in any computers is that you could get "ärg" om the connectors, so you have to take them off and then on again.

BTW, I am llocated in Malmö Sweden :)

I give you a PM, then we can continue in mail in Swedish

Oddball comment, but we had similar problems many years back. The problem turned out to be that we had plugged our HR Universal into the same kind of UPS system that we used for all our other computers. It couldn't handle the power requirements for the HR. We swapped it out for a much more powerful UPS system and the problems went away. (The really sweet part was that the UPS system beeped when it was overloaded. That beep came at exactly the right time and because it was located behind/beneath the HR -- it sounded like the beeo was coming from the HR...)
