H.U.G. the Official HR500 User Group > Packing a HR 500 plus for freight shipping

I recently purchased a HR 500 plus off ebay. The seller is in New Jersey and I am in the Bay Area in California.

I am hoping someone on here can provide advice on how to have it freight shipped to me? Can I trust a freight shipping company to pack the scanner appropriately for shipping? I am worried there may be components that need to be especially secured or packed separately, like the filters, or the lens or bellows?

Also what might I need to insure the scanner for? I got a great deal on it, but I don't know what the costs to repair damage would be!

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Hi Justin,

Congratulations and welcome to the HR500 family. I know I have already spoken to you on the phone prior to this reply, but I thought I should post anyway for the benefit of anyone else that may need to ship a scanner.

Of course, you could build a crate for it, but we have been shipping them wrapped in moving blankets, strapped to a pallet, and then stretch wrapped in plastic, and we have had no problems. We most often use Specialty Transport Inc. (STI) who specialize in shipping expensive and delicate equipment, but they do cost more. There is not anything special you need to do internally to protct it. As long as you protect it well with heavy blankets and strap it securely to the pallet I think you should be fine with any reliable shipper. Make sure and mark it well that it is DELICATE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT and FRAGILE. One benefit for shipping it this way is that because of the odd shape nothing will get stacked on top of it. As for insurance, we would insure an HR500 Plus for $10-15,000.00. An HR500 Plus shipped together with the AFD Long-roll attachment, we would insure for $25,000.00. Hope that helps everyone.
